The idea of ‘Cultural Literacy’ stems from the belief that students need to have good cultural, artistic and historical background knowledge in order to access a literary or factual text. Hence, we need to give students the opportunity to combine music, art and languages to enhance and improve their understanding and deepen their knowledge about culture, music and art work as well as help them achieve academic success and fulfill their true potential regardless of their ability, color or background. Students will explore other aspects such as the role of music, drama and other art forms to bring our cultures together and foster a culture of tolerance and eradicate stereotypes. As well as improving our students’ linguistic skills when understanding historical facts, workshops will be organised for students to be creative and explore different genres of art such as photography, sculpture in each country. Students and teachers will take an active part in debating cultures, exchanging ideas, creating debating society clubs, sharing and celebrating their cultural heritage and diversity through cultural shows/ exhibitions. Cultural Literacy is a tool not only to empower both educators and learners to get engaged into meaningful and creative learning but it also opens horizons to take learning beyond the classroom and borders.
This project also aims at enriching schools’ foreign language training programmes through student exchanges, interaction between cultures, improving linguistic skills, improving their academic access and achievement, teacher exchange and sharing good practice as well as involving the community and parents and cooperation between schools. Students and teachers will form focus groups in the partner countries. A website will be created to act as a platform to allow all students, teachers and parents to communicate and access the project’s updates, multimedia work as well as learn other languages. Questionnaires for the students, teachers and the communities will help us evaluate the project activities and bring in an element of flexibility to make necessary changes to help have a greater impact on teachers, learners, parents and communities.
